This special number serves as the primary point of reference for a student’s academic career at Unisa, from application through graduation. Every student, whether enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate programme, is assigned a student number that they will carry with them for the rest of their time at the institution.
All students needs their student number before they can claim their Unisa logins or even track your application status. Also, you will need a student number to register. All students or candidates without formal student number can get one by applying for it.

How To Get A Student Number
If you do not have a formal student number then follow the steps below to apply for one:
Step 1; Apply online for a student number. You’ll need to apply online for admission and during this process, a student number will be generated and communicated to you.
Step 2; Pay an application fee of R125. Unisa does not accept cheques. Deposit fee into the Unisa account at First National Bank. Also, you can visit the college website for the payment details and methods for fees.
Step 3; You will receive a notification via SMS and Email that your application for a student number is successful. Therefore make sure you provide you cellphone number and valid email address when applying for the student number.
Students can only register once they have their Unisa student number. Also, students who have lost their student number or can not remember it can recover or retrieve it.

UNISA Student Number Eligibility Criteria 2024-2025
The following people can apply for a student number at UNISA for the 2024-2025 academic year:
- If you have never studied for a formal qualification at Unisa, you must apply for a Unisa student number. Student numbers given by Unisa for short-term learning programmes are ineligible for official credentials. Your Unisa student number is your permanent Unisa student number.
- Unless you have studied at Unisa towards a formal certificate, please apply for a Unisa student number if you are seeking for admission to a Graduate School of Business Leadership (GSBL) qualification.
- If you are seeking for admission to a selection degree and have never previously studied towards a formal certificate at Unisa, you must register for a Unisa student number. If you do not have a formal Unisa student number and are admitted to one,
- An application for a Unisa student number is NOT an application for admission to a qualification. You must complete the process by applying for admission and uploading the supporting documents. You will not be allowed to enrol for the 2024-2025 academic year if you do not have a valid Unisa student number and are admitted to one of the selection degrees.
- An application for a Unisa student number is NOT an application for qualification entrance. You must finish the procedure by applying for admission and attaching the required documentation.

Forgot Student Number At UNISA 2024-2025
The following steps will guide you on how to retrieve or get back your student number if you don’t remember it or have lost it;
Step 1; Go to the homepage of myUnisa (https://my.unisa.ac.za/portal)
Step 2; Click on “Forgotten Student Number?” in the left navigation bar.
Step 3; Enter the require details to search for your student number. Read through the instructions provided in order not to make mistakes but retrieve student number successfully.
All you need to provide is your full name, date of birth and either your identification number or passport. Please leave one blank space/character between names. Then submit your details provided by you to search for your student number.
