The Unisa Online Application for Teaching 2027-2028 is the official starting point for securing your place in one of South Africa’s most respected education programmes. The University of South Africa’s Faculty of Education offers qualifications such as the Bachelor of Education, Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and various Advanced Diplomas that meet national teaching requirements and SACE registration standards.
For the 2027-2028 intake, Unisa teaching applications are expected to open in August or September and close in November. There is also a limited re-opening for selected qualifications from 3 to 17 June. Teaching programmes fill quickly due to high demand, so verify on the official Unisa Application website whether your chosen qualification is available in the June window or the main cycle.
All applications for teaching must be submitted online using the Unisa Application Tool. This applies to first-time applicants, current Unisa students changing to a teaching qualification, and final-year undergraduates who want to enrol for a PGCE. Unisa has confirmed that no self-help stations will be available at regional offices, so you need reliable internet access and clear digital copies of your ID, academic transcripts, and matric certificate.
Admission to Unisa teaching qualifications is competitive and not automatic. The university evaluates whether you meet the specific APS score, subject combinations, and language requirements for your programme, and whether space is available. Only complete applications are processed. You must pay the non-refundable R150 application fee, where applicable and successfully upload every required document before the deadline.
If you studied outside South Africa, your qualifications need SAQA evaluation. You may apply without the SAQA certificate of evaluation. If you receive an offer for 2027, you can register, but Unisa requires your SAQA certificate by the closing date for your qualification.

Unisa Online Application Date for Teaching 2027-2028
Unisa 2027 is expected to open in August and September; however, Unisa is currently open for limited applications for undergraduate, honours, master’s, and short courses. Check the dates below:
- Applications re-open for undergraduate qualifications for limited qualifications only. Apply between 3 and 17 June.
- Applications re-open for limited honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas only. Apply between 3 and 17 June
- Applications re-open for master’s & doctoral qualifications until 19 December (some exceptions apply).
- Registrations for the second semester for Short Learning Programmes are open from 18 May to 10 July.
UNISA Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching Admission Requirements 2027-2028
To qualify for teaching at Unisa, one must have:
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Degree endorsement) with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning and at least 40% in Mathematics or 50% in Mathematical Literacy,
or - A Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning and with at least an F symbol on HG or an E symbol on SG in Mathematics,
or - A National Certificate Vocational (NCV) Level 4 with at least 60% in three fundamental subjects, including the language of teaching and learning; 70% in four vocational subjects chosen from the NCV Level 4 subjects. Subjects under the following categories are approved as eligible for a BEd degree: All official languages at First Additional Language level, Agriculture and Nature Conservation, Business, Commerce and Management Sciences Services, Education, Training and Development, Mathematics and Natural Science.
NB: Applicants who do not comply with the above requirements should consider applying for the Higher Certificate in Education if they meet the statutory and additional requirements.
In addition, the module MTE1501 must be completed with a Higher Certificate.
Teaching Practice (Foundation Phase) (Grades 1 – 3) – PCF410X Admission Requirements
To carry out practical applications of teaching principles, theories, and concepts acquired in other modules through the completion of various workbooks during ten weeks in the Foundation Phase of a primary school. The student is expected to take control of a group (under supervision) and plan, present, and evaluate learning activities during this period.
Higher Certificate in Education
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least 30% in the language of teaching and learning,
or - A Senior Certificate (SC) with at least an F symbol on HG or an E symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning,
or - A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with an equivalent of at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning in terms of the NSC.
