Unisa NSFAS Online Application 2027-2028

Unisa NSFAS Online Application 2027-2028

Apply for NSFAS at Unisa: 2027-2028 Online Application Process:

Applying for NSFAS funding to study at Unisa for the 2027-2028 academic year requires early preparation, a clear understanding of deadlines, and knowledge of how NSFAS rules apply specifically to distance-learning students. As South Africa’s largest open distance learning institution, the University of South Africa (Unisa) partners with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to help qualifying students cover tuition, registration fees, and learning material costs.

Based on previous funding cycles, the NSFAS application window for Unisa 2027-2028 is expected to open in September 2026 and close on November 15th 2026. Submitting your application early through the myNSFAS online portal reduces the risk of technical delays and gives you time to correct any document errors. You cannot apply for NSFAS directly through Unisa. All applications, appeals, and status checks are managed on the official myNSFAS platform.

NSFAS eligibility for Unisa students has specific requirements. You must be a South African citizen with a combined household income of R350,000 or less per year, or R600,000 per year if you live with a disability. NSFAS only funds your first undergraduate qualification at Unisa, along with select postgraduate certificates and diplomas that are on the approved funding list. Short learning programmes, certificates below NQF Level 5, and second degrees do not qualify for funding.

Funding for Unisa students works differently from that for contact universities. Because Unisa is a distance-learning institution, NSFAS covers tuition fees, registration, and a learning materials allowance. Accommodation and transport allowances are not included unless you are a student with a disability who requires additional support. For this reason, confirm that your chosen qualification code is NSFAS-funded before you apply.

Document preparation determines success. You will need a certified copy of your ID, proof of household income such as payslips or SASSA documents, your latest academic results, and a signed NSFAS consent form. Parents or guardians must also submit supporting documents. Ensure all files are clear, legible, and uploaded as PDFs to avoid rejection.
