How to Enroll in Unisa’s LLB Program for the 2025-2026 Academic Year:

The UNISA (University of South Africa) LLB (Bachelor of Laws) programme is an undergraduate degree aimed to equip students with an extensive knowledge of law and legal concepts. UNISA, one of South Africa’s major distance learning universities, provides this programme through a variety of flexible learning alternatives, allowing students to continue legal education at their own pace regardless of geography or personal responsibilities.

The LLB programme at UNISA is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and recognized by the South African Legal Practise Council (LPC). This accreditation confirms that the degree satisfies high standards and is recognized by the legal profession.

The curriculum of the LLB programme includes, but is not limited to, criminal law, family law, constitutional law, contract law, administrative law, property law, and other legal disciplines. The programme is intended to provide students with a firm foundation in several areas of law, preparing them for a variety of legal vocations.

Who Can Register For LLB With Unisa 2025-2026

• Applicants: (new applicants & Unisa students who applied for admission to a new qualification) may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online. Unisa reserves the right to not process and/or cancel your registration if it is found that you were incorrectly admitted to a qualification.
• Re-registering students: may register for the 2024 academic year once the registration period opens.

Please note: Should you wish to start a new qualification, please apply online for the alternative qualification during the prescribed application period.

LLB With Unisa Admission Requirements 2025-2026

Your admission to Unisa depends on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your selected qualification. To apply for LLB with Unisa, have either of the following:

• A National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Degree endorsement) in the language of teaching and learning with at least 50%.
• A Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualifies for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning.
• A Diploma.
• A Higher Certificate.

Applicants who do not meet the standards set out above should consider applying for a diploma or higher certificate for which they comply with the legislative requirements.

• IRM1501 – Introduction to Research Methodology for Law and Criminal Justice
• PLS1502 – Introduction to African Philosophy
• PVL1501 – Law of Persons
• SCL1501 – Skills Course for Law Students
• SJD1501 – Social Dimensions of Justice
  Group B: Choose ONE of the following non-law modules at NQF level 5
• CMY1501 – Introduction to Criminology: Crime, Offenders and Criminal Behaviour
• CMY1502 – Introduction to Criminology: Victims and Reduction of Crime
• LIN1502 – Multilingualism: the Role of Language in the South African Context

Second level:

Students who have passed CIP2601 will retain credit for the module but must refer to the rules at
the 3rd level about CIP3701.

Students who have passed CMP2601 will retain credit for the module but must refer to the rules at the 3rd level about CMP3701. It is strongly recommended that modules be registered in the following order on 2nd level:

• 1st semester: ADL2601, CRW2601, CSL2601, IND2601, MRL2601
• 2nd semester: CRW2602, FUR2601, IOS2601, PVL2601, PVL2602
• ADL2601 – Administrative Law Pre-requisite:ILW1501 & SJD1501
• CRW2601 – General Principles of Criminal Law Pre-requisite: ILW1501 & SJD1501
• CRW2602 – Criminal Law: Specific Crimes Pre-requisite: ILW1501 & SJD1501
• CSL2601 – Constitutional Law Pre-requisite:ILW1501 & PLS1502
• FUR2601 – Fundamental Rights Pre-requisite:ILW1501 & PLS1502
• IND2601 – African Customary Law Pre-requisite: ILW1501 & PLS1502
• IOS2601 – Interpretation of Statutes Pre-requisite: ILW1501
• MRL2601 – Entrepreneurial Law Pre-requisite: ILW1501
• PVL2601 – Family Law Pre-requisite:ILW1501 & PVL1501

How To Choose LLB With Unisa 2025-2026

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF-level credits within a certain amount of time to graduate.

• Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously. You may NOT cancel your registration for Module A unless Module B is also cancelled.
• Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.

You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per academic year and/or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.

The maximum number of credits does not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

You must consider your available time when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately

• 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
• 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.
