The University of South Africa (Unisa) provides several Health and Safety Courses aimed at providing individuals with the information and skills required to safeguard the well-being of workers and the general public in a variety of work contexts. These courses address a variety of topics of health and safety management, including occupational health and safety, risk management, and emergency preparedness.

Occupational health and safety management, occupational hygiene, environmental health and safety, ergonomics, risk management, workplace emergency preparedness, and other topics are covered in these courses. The courses are designed to offer a thorough awareness of workplace safety concepts and practices.

A qualified learner will be equipped to independently implement and manage an effective safety program in a medium to large enterprise. Upon meeting all additional requirements, the learner will also be eligible to register with the Board of Registration for Occupational Health, Safety, and Associated Professionals as an Occupational Safety Practitioner.

Who Is Eligible To Register For Unisa Health And Safety Courses 2025-2026

If you are among the below list, you qualify to register for Unisa Health And Safety courses:

  • Applicants (new applicants & Unisa students who applied for admission to a new qualification) may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online. Unisa reserves the right to not process and/or cancel your registration if it is found that you were incorrectly admitted to a qualification.
  • Re-registering students may register for the 2024 academic year once the registration period opens.

Please note: Should you wish to start a new qualification, please apply online for the alternative qualification during the prescribed application period.

How To Choose Unisa Health And Safety Courses 2025-2026

Each Unisa qualification is designed to require the completion of a specified number of NQF-level credits within a set timeframe to achieve graduation.

  • Co-requisite: If Module A is a co-requisite for Module B, and you have not yet passed Module A, you must register for both Module A and Module B at the same time. You cannot cancel your registration for Module A without also canceling Module B.
  • Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you can register for Module B.

You are limited to registering for a maximum of 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year. This limit includes all modules but does not cover supplementary or aegrotat exams from previous semesters. Modules taken for non-degree purposes also count toward this credit limit.

When selecting your modules, consider the time required for study:

  • Semester Modules: Allocate approximately 6 to 8 hours per week.
  • Year Modules: Allocate approximately 4 to 6 hours per week.
