The University encourage Library clients to use the Library as a space conducive to research and study. The University Library was established in 1946 when Unisa introduced distance learning as a mode of tuition.

The Unisa Library, founded in 1873, has a long and illustrious history. Originally known as the Public Library and National Museum, it has grown through time to become one of Africa’s largest academic libraries. It has constantly evolved to suit the changing demands of a swiftly evolving academic environment as it has grown.

The Unisa Library’s principal objective is to assist the university’s teaching, learning, and research activities by offering access to a diverse array of information resources and services. It is crucial in creating an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and academic exploration.

When Unisa launched remote learning as a style of instruction in 1946, it gave birth to the Unisa Library and Information Services. The previous 50 years have seen remarkable expansion, with the printed book collection presently totaling more than 2.7 million volumes.

We have access to an expanding variety of electronic information resources, such as databases, e-journals, and e-books. These are available online 24/7 to enrolled Unisa students and staff, regardless of geographical location.

Unisa Library and Information Services is a signatory to the Berlin Open Access Declaration and strives to make information resources accessible to everybody. The following open access digital collections are available from us:
