Short Course in Grade R Teaching at UNISA Admission requirements 2025-2026

Admission requirements for the Short Course in Grade R Teaching at UNISA may vary, however, some general requirements that are expected for enrolment in the course are listed below:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least a 40% in the language of teaching and learning,
    or
  • a Level 4 National Certificate (Vocational) with a diploma entry endorsement or equivalent and at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning. A Level 4 or Level 5 Certificate,
    or
  • A Diploma in Early Development may also be presented for admission and assessment for advanced credit standing with appropriate subject combinations and levels of achievement, as prescribed by institutions accredited to offer learning programmes leading to qualification attainment and awarding.

Also, an official stamped proof of permanent employment (at least 12 months) in Grade R is required as per the Department of Basic Education requirement of the qualification. Failure to submit this document during application will disqualify you for admission. Volunteering or assistant positions do not qualify for admission.

How To Choose Your Short Course in Grade R Teaching Modules at UNISA 2025-2026

Each Unisa qualification is designed such that you must pass a given number of NQF-level credits within a certain time frame to graduate.

Co-requisite:

  • Module A is required before Module B. You wish to sign up for Module B but have not yet completed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B at the same time. You may NOT cancel your Module A registration unless Module B is likewise cancelled.

Pre-requisite:

  • If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you register for Module B.

You are not permitted to register for more than the maximum number of credits/modules each academic year and/or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
Supplementary and/or aegrotat exams from a prior semester do not count towards the maximum amount of credits.

Non-degree / non-diploma modules also contribute towards the maximum number of credits permitted. When selecting modules, you must evaluate your available time, since this will affect your academic achievement. You will require about

  • 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
  • 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.
